Check Your Hookah at the Door

I noticed this sign while waiting for my carry-out Chinese food. It struck me as humorous for many different reasons. I think the sign is implying that only cigarette smoke is not obnoxious. I guess you have to smoke your "hand rolled cigarettes" out back by the dumpsters with the cooks.

Joy to the World!

We wish you a merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year!

This is our first Christmas in our new house and it has been a wonderful holiday season.

That is little Lilly girl in the corner. She is doing what she does best...getting into everything. She is the reason that there are ornerments only on the top half of the tree. I don't know what she'll do for fun when we take her climbing tree down.

We miss you all and send love your way. May you have a blessed holiday season!

Naughty and nice,
k&l.b.

Where do I Begin?

I guess with the decloration, "yes, we are still here."

Have you ever noticed that once you fall behind on a project, it is eaiser to push it to a back corner of your mind rather that try to catch up? Maybe it's just me.

With all of that aside, welcome back to the Underground. I hope that summer found all of you well. Lauren and I had a pleasant summer, it just all seems like a blur sitting here in Mid-October.

As you can see, our summer included a white-water rafting trip in West Virginia (Do you ever wonder why the other one is not called East Virginia?) I believe that was a weekend in August.

In September, this cute little guy was born. This is Spencer DeVore. This is my sister and brother-in-law's 3rd child/3rd son. He was born on the 6th of September. Welcome aboard Spencer. As you can see, I always try to coordinate my outfit with the baby I am holding on the day. I did one heck of a job on that day.

Two of Lauren's best friends were married this summer (not to each other). Tanya was married in July and Beth in September. Congratulations! We wish you a whole lotta love.

In early October the Lakeview class of 1996 had its 10-year reunion. Unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity to take the trip to MI to attend, but it still happened and still makes me feel old. There is nothing like that first milestone reunion to make you reflect way too deeply on your life.

So that is where we are. We would love to hear what you have been up to. We miss and love y'all!

We're In!

Lauren and I are officially home owners now! Actually it's been two weeks now, but we are finally feeling settled in. We closed on the house on Thursday, June 30th. That morning we got the keys and went to start painting. The first project was the blue dining room. We thought that we could knock it out in one day. We knocked it out in one week. Painting always sounds more fun than it is. That first week and a half we finished painting and Lauren cleaned and moved boxes while I was at work (thank you Aunt Theresa for all your help!) Last Saturday, July 8, We rented a truck and some guys from work helped me move all of the furniture from the apartment.

MOVING TIP FROM KYLE: When recruiting help to move from an apartment, don't mention that you live on the third floor until after they show up. At that point, it's too late to back out...(Thank you Jim, Nick and Larry).

That Saturday was our official move in. This last Thursday we finished clearing the old apt. and turned in the keys.

The cats love the new house. Spot was freaked out when we first moved him here. He spent the first eight hours here under the bed crying. Lilly didn't mind the move at all. She's a little adventurer. Today we hung pictures on the walls and put finishing touches on the dining room. It really is starting to feel like home. Now we just have to finish emptying the boxes! Posted by Picasa

This is the finished dining room.

Here is Lauren painting on the day we moved in.

In this photo, Kyle just finished...
a) sitting in a dunk tank for a local charity fund raiser.
b) running in a forth of July marathon.
C) mowing his lawn for the first time under the hot Carolina sun.

If you picked 'c' you are correct and you get a big sweaty hug! (((squish)))

Our Little Piece of Carolina

It looks like Lauren and I are buying our first house! We've been talking about it for a couple months and looking a for a few weeks. We found this great little house and today we put in a bid for it and it was accepted by the seller. That means that as long as all the inspections and legal "mumbo-jumbo" works out, we will close at the end of this month and move in on July! The house is in Rockfish which is about 15 minutes west of where we live now. The neighborhood is in a semi-rural area but the area is growing rapidly with new construction. The house has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a formal dining room and a fireplace. It is on a large lot and it seems to be a nice quiet neighborhood. My favorite feature is the built-in brick grill on the patio. It's grillin' time baby!We are very excited on this big move. We'll keep you updated.
love, k&l.b.

PS. Out new kitten's name is Tiger-Lilly, but she prefers just to go by Lilly. He and Spot are getting along just fine now.

It Was Bound to Happen

“Lauren, I think I left my sunglasses at the checkout.” So I turned back into the parking lot of Wal*Mart. As I approached the entrance I noticed a lady giving away kittens. The one she was holding looked just like a 1 lb Spot. Lauren had to see this kitten. So I went back to the car. “Lauren, you have to see this kitten.” As we walked up to the kitten corral, a young couple was walking off with the little-spot. There were plenty other fur balls to play with. As the cute little things squeaked and nuzzled, we decided that it would be good for Spot to have a friend at home. So, here she is. We don't have a name picked out yet. She is very friendly, but Spot doesn’t know what to do with her. He sits across the room and keeps an eagle’s eye on her. He has approached her a few times, but the encounters keep ending with him hissing in her face. Not the way we raised him to treat his baby sister. She doesn’t seem to mind him though. She is so relaxed that she’s slept for four of the five hours that we’ve had her. It seems it might take awhile for their relationship to blossom.

As for the sunglasses; they were hooked on the belt-loop of my shorts the whole time. Oops.

The Ginn-harski's

Earlier this month Lauren and I had our favorite treat: visitors!

Lauren's parents, along with Brian, Danielle, and cute baby Elliot came to visit for a week. Lauren was on spring break, so she had the entire week to spend with them. What a blessing.

On my day off, we headed to the coast. We spent the day on the beach and went into Wilmington in the evening for a walk through downtown and dinner on the river. The weather was nice, but a little too cool to swim. The ocean waters were very cold. The star of the show was, of course, Elliot. It was his first trip to the beach and he was entranced by the sand. He would pick up a handful and let it slowly sift through his hand. He would do this over and over again. As you can see in the photo above, sifting sand can be quite tiring.

We had a wonderful day and a wonderful week. Of course it went by too quickly. The whole gang is now back to MI, but still missed dearly here in NC. Can't wait to do it again!

Firestorm

Last week we had severe storms roll through town. It was the heaviest rain I had ever seen. The locals tell me that it looked like a hurricane, but only lasted 5 minutes rather than 5 hours. The wind and rain was so heavy at it's apex, that the silver SUV in the photo would not have been visible. The storm knocked down a power line in front of the dealership and caused an electrical fire. I had never seen an electrical fire before and was amazed by how bright it was. The light was so intense that it hurt your eyes to look at it for more than just a few seconds. The fire lasted for about a half hour; luckily it was contained to that location in the road (the busiest road in Fayetteville). The next day a road crew was out patching the holes that were burned into the road. No one was hurt in the incident. Just a safety reminder: Never touch a downed power line...especially one that has turned into a raging inferno.

"To Rise up out of Asia"

That is roughly what Kia translates to in English. That stylish, blue, 2006, Kia Spectra translates into my new wheels. Last Tuesday Lauren and I traded in the yellow Focus. I'm sorry I didn't give you advanced warning to say good-bye. It was an exciting experience to purchase our first new car. I not only sell Kia's, I buy them too. Here are some photos...

Laura and Lauren

The similarities between my wife's name and my sister's name may make this blog difficult to follow. Just imagine how hard it is to keep the names straight while having a conversation with the two of them...while enjoying a beer.

Lauren and I had the wonderful luck of visiting Laura last Wednesday. Laura and her work colleagues were in Greensboro, NC for a national convention on childhood learning. Lauren took a day off from teaching. Wednesday is my day of leisure. Lauren and I left late in the morning to head up to Greensboro. We met Laura at the local mall, where she was finishing up with lunch, and headed to downtown Greensboro. While downtown we visited the library, got a cup of latte and lingered around the historical museum. The museum locked the doors at five o'clock so we didn't have a lot of time. I think we were the last to leave. Being later in the evening, there was little to do in the city, so we headed back to the hotel and convention center. The hotel that Laura was staying at had a free 'happy hour' for their guests. I guess you could call it lodging and liquor. After some laughing in the lounge and some lively conversation, Laura, Lauren and I headed out to dinner. Laura treated Lauren and I to dinner at Ruby Tuesday's. Lauren and I thought that was a lovely gesture from Laura and thank her again. Needless to say, no one ordered the lobster. Laura, Lauren and I all ate light as were had filled up on snacks from the 'happy hour.' apparently we never learned our lesson form our parents when they would lecture about "spoiling dinner with too many snacks." Laura, Lauren and I met up with Laura's colleagues after dinner and the six of us loitered in a restaurant at the convention center. I was getting lazy from my lager and it was getting late. Lauren and I had to leave. We dropped Laura off at the lobby of her living quarters and Lauren and I headed back to Fayetteville. It is always a treat to visit with loved ones. It was a unique opportunity that Lauren and I had to visit with Laura. It was great seeing you sis! Send the family our love.

It Really is a Small World After All

Lauren and I love having visitors! This weekend my folks, John and Jan, came to visit. I just don't understand why you northerners pull the cold down with you. It dropped almost 20 degrees from Friday to Saturday. Sunday was cold (relatively speaking) and Monday it bounced back up 15 degrees. We still had a wonderful time all weekend, despite the unpleasant weather. The photos are from the Airborne and Special Operations Museum in downtown Fayetteville. We went to the museum on Saturday morning/afternoon. It is a nice museum and one of the few things to do in Fayetteville. Despite the propaganda distributed by the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce, Fayetteville is not traditionally known as a vacation hot spot. As it turns out, I was not the only person there that day who graduated in 1996 from Lakeview High School in Battle Creek, MI and had parents visiting that weekend. While exploring WWII artifacts, I glanced to my right and, despite all statistical probabilities, saw a fellow L.H.S. graduate, Trish (surname being withheld for privacy consideration). Although not close friends ourselves back in high school, Trish and I did have some mutual friends. She is now a teacher here in Fayetteville and her husband looked to be in the Army…that or he is adept at assimilating into indigenous cultures. They were doing what apparently everyone does while their parents are in town: take a trip to the museum.

sidebar:

There were 200 graduates in the L.H.S. class of 1996. According to the CIA World Fact Book, the population of the United States is approximately 300 million people. My fuzzy-logic concludes that the chances of you randomly pulling out a person from the general population, and that person being a part of the L.H.S. class of '96, is 1 in 1.5 million.

end sidebar:

Throughout the weekend, Lauren, myself, and the folks also drove around Fort Bragg, watched two movies, went out for dinner, walked around our neighborhood, and sat around enjoying each other's company. I had not seen them since I left Michigan last September, so it was uber-wonderful to spend time with them again. On Monday morning, John and Jan headed back to MI and made it safely home Monday night. We had a great weekend and look forward to doing it again! Thanks for visiting, you two!

Inspired by the unofficial 10 year class reunion, I'll leave you with this...

It's a world of laughter
A world of tears
It's a world of hopes
And a world of fears
There's so much that we share
That it's time we're aware
It's a small world after all

There is just one moon
And one golden sun
And a smile means
Friendship to every one
Though the mountains divide
And the oceans are wide
It's a small world after all

...I'm sure you know the rest. Happy singing.

Winter Blues

On Thursday morning I saw the first snowflakes I've seen since last March. It was kind of exciting. Big, fluffy, beautiful flakes. We were all like little kids with our noses pressed against the showroom glass, looking into the snow globe world. An hour later the show was over. No more snow. In fact, it became a pleasant 55 degree day. The sans-snow photo is of the cloudless sky at sunset that evening. Gotta love NC.
